Task 9

CAST AWAY

Based on the story about a guy named Chuck when he is stranded in an island for four years. It started when a storm hit the ship.Chuck explores the island, and recovers a number of FedEx packages that wash ashore from the jet cash; he also discovers the body of one of the pilots. Chuck gives him a proper burial, and then opens the packages. At night on one of the island's beaches, Chuck sees the lights of a ship. Using a small flashlight he recovered from the body of the pilot, he tries to signal the ship but is unsuccessful. The next morning, he attempts to leave the island in the rubber raft that he inflated as his jet was sinking. Owing to high breakers on the coral reef surrounding the island's lagoon, his raft is washed back on to the reef and get's punctured, leaving him with no means to escape the island and badly injured by the sharp coral. Shortly after his escape effort, he establishes a rudimentary camp and begins to open the FedEx parcels. Several of the items he eventually uses to survive (for example, the sharp end of a pair or ice skates serve as an ax). Another parcel contains a volley ball that eventually becomes his companion (he calls his companion 'Wilson,' he name of the company that manufactured the ball). One of the FedEx parcels is marked on the outside with a pair of wings and for unexplained reasons he leaves this parcel unopened. Ultimately, his three most prized possession, the items that kept him alive in spirit were the volley ball, the box with the wings, and an heirloom watch given to him by his girlfriend (it has her photograph fastened to the inside cover). While trying to make fire from rubbing wood together, Chuck cuts his hand. In a fury, he grabs a volley ball and throws it. His bloody hand leaves an imprint on the ball and from this, he fashions a face naming it 'Wilson;' to mitigate his isolation, this artifact becomes his companion.Shortly thereafter, Chuck learns to make fire, and soon is able to catch crabs, open coconuts, collect drinking water and spear fish. In a small cave, Chuck sets up his new home and learns to become self sufficient. He suffers from a painful toothache because he so disliked dentists that he put off attending to a tender tooth before leaving for Malaysia: Eventually, this tooth becomes so painful that he is compelled to use the sharp end of an ice skate blade to knock it out of his mouth. One evening, he plots out the direction of his jet to try and figure out where the crash occurred. He estimates that if the search and rescue team looked for the downed cargo plane, they'd have to search an area twice the size of Texas...making him doubt that he'll ever be found.

Four years pass, and Chuck continues to survive day-to-day. His weight has pared down considerably, and his hair has grown out. One day, he comes across two plastic walls of a broken port-a-potty. Remembering the wings on the FedEx parcel, Chuck develops a plan for a raft with the port-a-potty's walls acting as a makeshift sail. He chops down trees, ties them together rope made from tree bark and augmented with video tape he found in one of the FedEx parcels. Chuck plans his escape when the prevailing winds change from southwest to northeast. While biding his time for the proper weather, Chuck begins to prepare food, water, and other necessities for his escape. He brings his 'companion' Wilson aboard along with the FedEx parcel with the wings. Owing to the direction of the winds, with the aid of his sail and a pair of makeshift oars, he affects his escape over the coral reef. Chuck has no real idea of where he is headed but figures that he would rather die at sea that spend the rest of his life alone on that island. In a storm, his pal Wilson is knocked off the raft and floats away while Chuck is asleep. Chuck is awakened by the splashing of a whale and finds Wilson gone but faced with the prospect of losing Wilson or losing the raft, he lets Wilson go but is pained by his decision. The storm all but wrecks Chucks raft and it slowly begins to come apart and sick into the sea. Finally, when he has just about given up all hope of rescue, Chuck is nearly run down by a large ship that ultimately rescues him.

On returning to Memphis, Chuck is guest of honour at a large company-organised welcome reception. He has been told that Kelly is now married (with children). Kelly intended to meet Chuck at the celebration but she doesn't feel up to it and her new husband comes to apologize for her absence. Kelly's new husband was one of Chuck's dentists before he was lost at sea. Kelly's husband meets with Chuck in private to tell him that Kelly is rather in a state of shock and is having a difficult time coping with the reality of his rescue. He tells Chuck that she needs more time to regain control of her emotions. Looking out of the window he sees Kelly in tears being comforted and led away in the car park.

Later that evening, Chuck takes a taxi to Kelly's home. She was expecting him to come and she invites him in for coffee. They talk for some time about trivia and he discovers how much her life and ambitions have changed and how she coped with his presumed death. Chuck gives Kelly back the watch she had given him telling her that it is a family heirloom and should remain in her family. He elects to keep her picture. She gives him the keys to his car that she has kept in good condition all those years. They apologise to each other for all that has happened and he drives off slowly in the pouring rain.

Kelly runs after him shouting his name and they meet at the end of the drive as Chuck reverses back to see Kelly once more. They declare their undying love for each other but, sitting talking in the car, Chuck realises that Kelly must continue her new life.

If were chuck in the story i will go on my life and think more dependently after stranded in an island which is a place that complete isolation from people.

Task 8

It started with just a simple coffee. Some prefer taking with a couple of sugars , some prefer taking it with a dash of creamer and many other options and varieties that can be explore. Me? I prefer my coffee to be just black with just a little bit touch of sugar. Why?this is because i am a simple guy living a simple life and i describe my life just like a simple cup of black coffee.

"LIFE IS LIKE A CUP OF COFFEE"
T.S Elliot once said "I have measured out my life with coffee spoons." Everyone has a different kind of life with a different way of handling it. The way we handle our life is pretty much is in our hand. For me, i had been living my 19 years of life by living my life abundantly. Everyone should be nicer to everyone, spread some love, speak kindly and leave the rest to god. Sometimes when I drink my coffee and it tasted so bitter I am too  lazy to pick up a single spoon to stir it and finally found the sweetness at the very bottom of the cup and realizes why didn't i did at the very early moment. That's what we call a life, It's always gonna be full of surprises in the end. We never knew what might we get until that one moment where everything seems to make sense. Everyone will eventually be at the top and bottom in some phases in their journey as a learning human being. No matter how awful life treats us, we must always hold our head up high and walk straight to a better day without looking back on yesterday's mistakes.

The cups that we choose to fill our coffee sometimes describe what type of person we are. Everyone sure love to have the best in everything because that is pretty much what we want in life. But don't be wrong by always choosing the best cup to use just by judging the way it look , u might be surprise to find that some coffee taste extremely good inside the ugliest cup that u least expected. It's the coffee that compliments the cup and not the other way around. Life is always the major thing and physical things only gonna be the cherries on top. Do not judge any people with how they look , how rich they are or any other characteristics that can fool the eyes. Instead, its the heart that matters that can be use in life. All in all, life is a beautiful journey for everyone, don't ever take things for granted because we only have one life and there is no turning back and finally we will reach the sweet success in the end.

Task 7

THE PEARL

The story is about kino and the pearl that is making his life damage.
Kino, a young and strong but poor Mexican pearl diver, lives in a small town called La Paz, with his domestic partner Juana, and his baby son, Coyotito. When Coyotito is stung by a scorpion and is slowly dying from the poison, Kino must find a way to pay the town doctor, an extremely prejudiced white settler, to cure Kino's son. When Kino discovers an enormous pearl when diving for pearls, he is ready to sell it for money to pay the doctor. But other forces seem to be working against Kino.
Nearly as soon as Kino returns from sea, the whole town knows of the pearl. Nicknamed "the pearl of the world," many people begin to crave it. Soon after the pearl is found, Kino is attacked in his own home. Determined to get rid of it, he takes the pearl to the pearl buyers in the town and tries to receive a good price. When the pearl buyers refuse to give him the amount of money that Kino wants, he decides to go to the capital to find a better price. However, Juana, seeing that the pearl is causing darkness and greed, sneaks out of the house late at night to throw the pearl back into the ocean. When Kino catches her, furious, he drives her to the ground and leaves her on the beach. Returning to the house, Kino is attacked himself by several unknown men, one who is killed by Kino and one who knocks Kino down and tries to find the pearl. When it is not found, the attacker leaves, but Juana, recovered, finds it again and gives it to Kino.
When they go back to the town, their home is found burning down. Kino and Juana spend the day in the shadows of Juan Tomás (Kino's brother)'s house, hiding from the townspeople and gathering their strength to find the capital city. Only then can they hope to sell the pearl for a decent price. When the family travels away, they realize that they are being tracked by men who are hired to hunt them.
When Kino, Juana, and Coyotito hide, Kino realizes that he must get rid of the trackers if they are to survive the trek to the capital. Desperately, Kino hides at night near the trackers' camp, ready to attack, but the men hear the cry of baby Coyotito. One of the men cock a rifle to shoot in the direction of the cry, where Juana and Coyotito lie, and as Kino leaps to stop him, the man shoots. Kino tackles the man down and kills the remaining tracker before returning to his family and finds the man's shot had found its mark. Kino and Juana then return to La Paz, mourning, no longer wanting the pearl, with Coyotito's dead body. At the end, Kino throws the pearl back into the ocean himself. The pearl has caused nothing but sorrow, greed, and evil.

THE AUTHOR OF THE STORY IS :

John steinbeck published the book in 1947.He tell the story about a pearl diver named kino and explore mans nature and greed and evil

Synopsis :

The story is a simple tale about Kino, an Indian pearl diver. In the beginning, Kino lives a simple life, loves his family, and enjoys complete contentment; but the story tells about how his discovery of the most wonderful pearl in the world shatters his happiness. In the first chapter, Kino's calm life is interrupted when a scorpion stings his infant son, Coyotito. Kino's wife, Juana, insists that they take the baby to the doctor in town. Cruelly, the doctor refuses to treat the infant, for Kino does not have the money to pay his fee. In anger, Kino strikes out at the doctor and all he stands for when he bangs and injures his hand against the doctor's gate.
Kino returns to the beach with his family. He, along with Juana and Coyotito, rows out to an oyster bed, where he begins his work. After gathering several small oysters, he spies a giant one that reveals it has a pearl inside. He quickly picks it up and comes to the surface. Back in the canoe, he opens the large oyster and discovers the most wonderful pearl in the world. News of Kino's treasure travels rapidly through the town. Everyone is envious of Kino's pearl, and many think of ways to acquire some of Kino's future riches. During the night, someone comes into Kino's hut, searching for the pearl. The "dark force" injures Kino before he flees. Juana begs Kino to get rid of the pearl, which seems to be causing evil things to happen to them.
The next day, Kino dressed in his best rags, goes to town to sell his treasure to the pearl buyers. Working in a unified manner, they all tell Kino that his pearl is worthless and offer him a really low price. Kino refuses to sell the pearl and states that he will take it to the capital, where he feels certain he will get a just and higher price. That night, Kino is again attacked in his hut as the "dark force" seeks to steal the pearl, which Kino has carefully hidden. This time Juana takes matters into her own hands. She unearths the pearl and takes it to the beach to throw it back into the gulf. Kino stops her from her action and saves the pearl. He is so enraged at his wife's behavior that he knocks her down and kicks her. Obviously, the pearl is changing Kino.
On the way back to his hut, Kino is again attacked. This time, he stabs and kills his assailant. As a result, he and Juana are forced to quickly flee from La Paz. Before leaving, they discover their canoe has been destroyed and their hut has been burned. Kino now feels like a pursued animal, but he still refuses to part with the pearl. He, Juana, and Coyotito move through the arid desert, being closely followed by professional trackers who want the pearl. When they reach the mountains, Kino hides Juana and the baby in a cave. He goes to attack the trackers. He stabs and kills the first two of them; when the third one tries to escape, Kino takes their rifle and fires shots at him. One of the bullets enters the cave and kills Coyotito.
Juana and Kino return to their village to bury their child. The pearl no longer has a value to them, for all their dreams and happiness have vanished. As a result, they walk to the beach and toss the pearl back into the gulf. They watch silently as it sinks into the dark waters.

The reason I like the story because it tell us that every person can change from good to bad in a sudden due to greed and also tell the human nature.I like the story because it has many lessons.

Types of sentence structure ( TASK 2 )

Juan and Arturo play footballevery pm

Compound sentence :

I try to speak Spanish, my friend tried to speak English.
Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping.

Teachers work back at home after he realized the error.

Compound -Complex sentence :

Women whose mothers I talk to sell cosmetics.

Sentence Sructure (TASK 2)

 SIMPLE SENTENCE
A simple sentence, also called an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought. In the following simple sentences, subjects are in yellow, and verbs are in green.

A. Some students like to study in the mornings.
B. Juan and Arturo play football every afternoon.
C. Alicia goes to the library and studies every day.
The three examples above are all simple sentences.  Note that sentence B contains a compound subject, and sentence C contains a compound verb.  Simple sentences, therefore, contain a subject and verb and express a complete thought, but they can also contain a compound subjects or verbs.

COMPOUND SENTENCE
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (Helpful hint: The first letter of each of the coordinators spells FANBOYS.) Except for very short sentences, coordinators are always preceded by a comma. In the following compound sentences, subjects are in yellow, verbs are in green, and the coordinators and the commas that precede them are in red.

A.  I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English.
B.  Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping.
C.  Alejandro played football, for Maria went shopping.
The above three sentences are compound sentences.  Each sentence contains two independent clauses, and they are joined by a coordinator with a comma preceding it.  Note how the conscious use of coordinators can change the relationship between the clauses.  Sentences B and C, for example, are identical except for the coordinators.  In sentence B, which action occurred first?  Obviously, "Alejandro played football" first, and as a consequence, "Maria went shopping.  In sentence C, "Maria went shopping" first.  In sentence C, "Alejandro played football" because, possibly, he didn't have anything else to do, for or because "Maria went shopping."  How can the use of other coordinators change the relationship between the two clauses?  What implications would the use of "yet" or "but" have on the meaning of the sentence?

COMPLEX SENTENCE
A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. A complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although,or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. In the following complex sentences, subjects are in yellow, verbs are in green, and the subordinators and their commas (when required) are in red.

A. When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page.
B. The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error.
C. The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow.
D. After they finished studying, Juan and Maria went to the movies.
E. Juan and Maria went to the movies after they finished studying.
When a complex sentence begins with a subordinator such as sentences A and D, a comma is required at the end of the dependent clause. When the independent clause begins the sentence with subordinators in the middle as in sentences B, C, and E, no comma is required. If a comma is placed before the subordinators in sentences B, C, and E, it is wrong.
Note that sentences D and E are the same except sentence D begins with the dependent clause which is followed by a comma, and sentence E begins with the independent clause which contains no comma.  The comma after the dependent clause in sentence D is required, and experienced listeners of English will often hear a slight pause there.  In sentence E, however, there will be no pause when the independent clause begins the sentence.

Compound-complex sentence
Finally, sentences containing adjective clauses (or dependent clauses) are also complex because they contain an independent clause and a dependent clause.  The subjects, verbs, and subordinators are marked the same as in the previous sentences, and in these sentences, the independent clauses are also underlined.

A. The woman who(m) my mom talked to sells cosmetics.
B. The book that Jonathan read is on the shelf.
C. The house which AbrahAM  Lincoln was born in is still standing.
D. The town where I grew up is in the United States.
Adjective Clauses are studied in this site separately, but for now it is important to know that sentences containing adjective clauses are complex.

SAMPLES AND NOTE OF BRAINSTORMING,LISTING AND BUBBLING (TASK 1)

Brainstorming
Brainstorming is a lot like freewriting, except it does not use complete sentences and is often written as a list.

  • Obesity in kids
  • See it everywhere
  • Pretty big percentage of kids are obese
  • Cause: lack of exercise (no recess in Georgia; playing outside has been lost to video games)
  • Cause: poor diet (fast food, Super Size)
  • Health risk: diabetes
  • Health risk: heart conditions
  • How do we fix this?
  • Educate kids and parents
  • Make school cafeterias food healthier
  • Encourage grocers in all areas to carry healthier and fresher produce and meats

Bubbling
Bubbling, like freewriting above, is a great technique when you have not yet developed a clear idea of where you are going with your topic. This is also a great technique for people who are visual learners.

Now think about some things relating to this.

Continue by adding on to these new circles :

They are also helpful for organizing your ideas later on, because things that should be linked together in the paper will be linked on the bubble map.

Listing

As you can see from our bubbling and clustering examples, we’re starting to generate some organization while we prewrite. Listing is another great way to organize as you prewrite.

Audiences Why do they watch? Favourites Dislikes
Male
(what percentage of total audience?)
To be scared Creepy creatures, aliens Texas chainsaw
Female To relax and escape stress Classics,Dracula,
wolfman
Candyman
